Beretta 93R automatic (or machine) pistol has been in development during the second half of the 1970s, and first appeared circa 1977. The "R" stands for Raffica, which is Italian for "volley", "flurry", or "burst". It was designed to be used by the Italian counter-terrorism forces of Nucleo Operativo Centrale di Sicurezzaand Gruppo di Intervento Speciale but was also adopted by other police and military forces who required a concealable weapon with rapid fire capabilities.
